Making a mud kitchen” book by Jan White

There is little more important in our physical world than earth and water and they are truly intriguing things, especially when they interact.  Mixing soil, water and a range of other natural materials has a foundational role in early childhood which has deep importance and endless possibilities for well-being, development and learning.  The breadth and depth of what these experiences offer young children is truly remarkable. Extract from “making a mud kitchen” by Jan white.

Hikaru dorodango are balls of mud, molded by hand into perfect spheres, dried, and polished to an unbelievable luster. The process is simple, but the result makes it seem like alchemy.

Further information These links provide blogs, research, articles, photographs and information about outdoor play in general and many specific to mud play and mud kitchens. Thanks to all these great people and sites for sharing so much. I know how much work is involved to produce information to share, and we really appreciate it.

Examples and case studies

The work carried out at different settings, on a day to day basis, can be fascinating. In this section of the Mud Pack, we have brought some examples together. By sharing this work with you, we hope you are inspired and can develop confidence to get children outdoors and interacting with natural materials more.

 Health and Safety

A range of documents by different authors offering an introduction to the concept of risk benefit assessments and templates for assessments. Templates are working documents offering ideas rather than finished assessments. This is to ensure the author of the assessments fully interacts with their own processes. All these documents are a guide to support your own health and safety procedures and are not designed to be complete in any way.

Letters and posters

A number of letters and posters are included in the Mud Pack that you can change and adapt, for your setting, saving you time when organising a Mud Kitchen or International Mud Day event.
Please feel free to download and adapt. All we ask is that you reference
