Activity Title: Clove hitch

Donated by: Muddyfaces

Date added: 04/02/2012

Straight forward knot often used in the outdoors. It is a little tricky to learn but once mastered it is amazing how many times you use it. From tying string onto sticks to make leaf mobiles, using it to build obstacle courses or balance lines.

Activity Title: Log Splitting Jigsaws

Donated by: Bishops Wood Centre

Date added: 04/02/2012

Two activities in one. Small children love splitting small logs and lots of them then trying to put them back together again (exactly!) – hey presto instant jigsaw!!!!

Comment by: Elizabeth

Date added: 15/02/2012

This is a perfect example of a child led experience. Jon said they had no intention of putting the wood back together yet the children spent more time doing this than splitting the wood. Exactly what forest school facilitates. I hope there are a few more activity ideas donated to the swap shop that have been generated by the children.

Activity Title: Creeping Fox

Donated by: Catherine Beaumont

Date added: 11/02/2012

This is a variation of the 'Sleeping Miser' game in Joseph Cornell's book, with a twist, I think from Chris Holland's book. The child (or adult!) sits in the middle of a large circle made by the rest of the group. Each member of the group has chosen a special item from the woods to try to get to place next to the person sitting in the middle. The person in the middle, 'sleeping miser' or 'prey', sits eyes closed, or blindfolded holding a water spray. (Garden centre variety plant sprayer). The idea of the game is to get your special item to the middle without getting sprayed with water. Each time you get 'hit', it's back to the edge of the circle! I have found the edition of the water spray extremely popular! :O)

Ha Ha I have never used a water sprayer, can see how this would be oh so popular! I have done this activity with younger children using a large tarp with a dragon (adult) in the middle. Also works well with older children where they take turns being the dragon. The tarp rustles making it even harder to creep in (good if your woodland area is particularly quiet underfoot) also can be played in a school yard or field. In the absence of water we just pointed but still great fun. I was amazed how quietly a large group of children would sit as they watched their classmate creeps in to steal the dragons treasure.

Another cute Nature loving activity and essential for the current weather conditions, is pine cone feeders. Fasten a piece of string or cotton around the cone to fasten to a twig or branch in the tree. Push lumps of cold lard into the pine cone spaces. Some people use peanut butter instead! Roll the lardy/peanutty cone into a tub of bird seed. Voila!!! Bird feeders and you can redo them when the birds have munched the seed and lard. http://www.diyalert.com/files_crafty/birdseed7.jpg

Activity Title: Making a kazoo

Donated by: Muddyfaces

Date added: 04/02/2012

A Kazoo is a musical instrument or general noise maker depending on the skill of the person making it and the person playing it. Basically an elastic band vibrates in a cavity banging against the walls and as the air is blown through the cavity. Welcome any better descriptions of how kazoos work. A Piece of wood is cut and split and the little cavities carved out with a knife. This document was created about 6 yrs ago so some of the techniques and positioning will have changed. It is essential if carrying out this activity with groups that you have the correct training and experience of using these tools

Activity Title: Creatures in the wood

Donated by: Amanda Honour

Date added: 06/02/2012

We talked about the creatures who live in our woods and where they live, then we made our own creatures in tree branches, under logs etc. Made out of bread dough with any woodland 'bits' as eyes, legs etc, they were eaten after we left them in the wood.

Activity Title: Mallet Making

Date added: 03/02/2012

This activity uses tools to create a mallet out of one piece of wood. This document was created about 6 yrs ago so some of the techniques and positioning may well have changed but it gives good information on how to make a mallet using a bow saw and billhook. It is essential if carrying out this activity with groups that you have the correct training and experience of using these tools.

I had a go at doing this during my Forest School training and it is awesome!! I couldn't believe I had made such a fantastic oject from one solid piece of wood - the sense of achievement was huge and I have used my mallet in the forest since!

Natural hand warmers! Smooth round pebbles about palm size, warm up a container of water on the fire, put the stones in and let them absorb the heat. Takes about 2 mins for an average sized stone. The responsible person or adult lifts them out with tongs or a spoon with holes in or u could put a colander in the pan first to drain them all in one go when u lift the colander out of the pan or container of hot water. Dry and cool them enough for children to hold or if flat put inside gloves or mitts or wrap in a small wool hand knitted pocket or piece of cloth. Toasty! They should stay hot for about 10 minutes. When they cool down, pop them back in the container of hot water :) Cheap, cheerful and natural :) Oh! We discussed this in a thread on Forest Education Initiative on Face book and we liked the idea of linking this simple hand warmer to an activity using the Stone Soup Story and also a nice follow up session from Stone Soup Story to making a yummy Stone Soup with veggies outdoor cooking session! Enjoy ! x _3 x http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_soup#Story

When i was on a Forest School Wales networking weekend in Cefn woods Sarah Wilson did felt making around smooth cobbles . When they were finished they made lovely colourful little felt pockets. This would be a great activity to do and provide a soft protective cover on the warm rocks. I will ask Sarah if she could donate this activity to the swap shop. You can become a member of FSW even if you are based outside Wales and attend their networking days www.forestschoolwales.org.uk
