The History of the Storm Kettle

It is the early 1900s and the Western part of Ireland is particularly remote, the winter nights seem endless.  In order to while away these dark evenings some of the Irish Crofters are manufacturing a simple water boiler using hand tools. They are normally tooled in copper and take many hours to make.

These water boilers are also used in the summer months to easily and quickly boil water for tea by enthusiastic fishermen who visit Ireland regularly to enjoy the splendid fishing.

Circa 70 years later, in the early 1970s John Grindlay and his colleagues decided that the time had come when these wonderful water boilers should be manufactured in quantity, they then could be made available to outdoor enthusiasts all over the world.

John borrowed an original copper kettle and took it to England where tooling was manufactured and the first 10 kettles were eventually produced, these were very quickly sold for £10.00 each in 1979.

Popular demand meant that production had to increase dramatically and due to consumer requirements, new models needed to be introduced.

Today, John still produces the ‘Storm Kettle’ in the UK, they are now used in all continents of the world. The ‘Storm Kettle’ has quickly become a vital and important piece of kit for all outdoor enthusiasts, survival and bushcraft experts
