The potato peeler is alot cheaper than a pen knife. It helps children have a feel for the whittling action without having to angle a knife blade. There are no working parts to use or fiddle with.

The blade of a peeler can easily get clogged and it is tempting to unclog the blade by running your finger along it which can cause injury.

Practitioner comments

There are two schools of thoughts regarding the use of potato peelers.
The first is it is a cheaper option to allow children to practice the whittling action supported by the points made above.

The second is that a potato peeler is designed to peel potatoes not whittle sticks and the correct tools should be used for the correct job.
